Burna Boy is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer who is widely regarded as one of the most influential Afrobeats artists of the 21st century. He was born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He started making music on his phone using an app called BandLab, and uploaded his songs to SoundCloud and YouTube, where he gained a loyal fan base. His music is influenced by artists such as Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West. The album featured collaborations with artists such as Zlatan, Jeremih, Serani, Damian Marley and Angelique Kidjo.
He won the Best International Act award at the BET Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards, and the Artiste of the Year in Africa award at the All Africa Music Awards. He also performed at various venues and events, such as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Wembley Arena and the O2 Academy Brixton. Burna Boy released his fifth studio album, Twice as Tall, in August 2020, which was co-executive produced by his mother Bose Ogulu and American rapper and producer Diddy. The album featured guest appearances from artists such as Youssou N’Dour, Stormzy, Chris Martin, Sauti Sol and Naughty by Nature. The album won Best World Music Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, making him the first Nigerian solo artist to win a Grammy. He also won the African Artiste of the Year award at the Ghana Music Awards and the African Musik Magazine Awards. Burna Boy released his sixth studio album, Love, Damini, in July 2022, which became the highest debut of an African album on the Billboard 200 chart. It also became the highest charted African album in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and France. The album featured singles such as “Last Last”, “Big 7” and “Jagele”. In October, Burna Boy was awarded the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic plaque for his achievements in music. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him number 197 on its list of the 200 greatest singers of all time. He also won the BET International Act award for the fourth time, and the Headies Afrobeats Single of the Year and Song of the Year awards for “Last Last”.
