The Bridge Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge were an American doo-wop group, best known for their hit single, “16 Candles”. The group was formed in 1958 by Johnny Maestro (born John Mastrangelo; May 7, 1939 – March 24, 2010), and originally consisted of Maestro, Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannone, Jerry Corbetta, Jimmy Forte, and Sammy Strain.
The group’s first single, “Worst That Could Happen”, was released in 1961 and did not chart. However, their second single, “16 Candles”, became a huge hit, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1962. The song was written by Luther Dixon and Allyson R. Khent and originally intended for The Crests, who turned it down. The group continued to have success with several more singles, including “The Worst That Could Happen” (which reached the Top 10), “The Angels Listened In”, and “Welcome Me Love”. They also had a hit with a cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me”. The group disbanded in 1968, but Maestro continued to tour under the name The Brooklyn Bridge, until his death in 2010.
