About Animal Collective

The band Animal Collective is a Baltimore, Maryland-based experimental pop group. whose music is characterized by an omnivorous approach to melody and rhythm that incorporates influences from a diverse array of genres including psychedelia, noise rock, ambient, pop, and electronica. The group was founded in 2001 by Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz). The band's first album, Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, was released in 2000. Animal Collective's music is often experimental and avant-garde, and has been associated with the neo-psychedelia and freak folk genres. The band employs traditional rock instrumentation, as well as electronics and other sound-processing techniques. The band's live shows are often elaborate and immersive sensory experiences, incorporating strobe lights, laser effects, and large puppets. By the time they reached their senior year of high school, Portner, Lennox, Weitz, and Dibb had gathered separate collections of work that had been recorded on cassette tapes. The group developed into "walls of drones with guitars and delay pedals and us screaming into mics," in Portner's words, as a result of influences from horror movie soundtracks and 20th century classical music, as well as a common love for vocal harmony. Lennox investigated electronic music in college while Weitz and Portner listened to avant-garde songs. He became interested in this genre after hearing The Orb's UFOrb (1992) at boarding school. After finishing the recording of Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, the group (without Dibb) got together in 2000, and they held improvisational music sessions using antique synthesizers, acoustic guitars, and common household items. The vocal group the Beach Boys, whose co-founder and leader Brian Wilson was inspired by barbershop music and his use of psychedelic substances, played unique songs that Wilson wrote. The Beach Boys are frequently compared to the American rock band Animal Collective. Animal Collective's music was negatively described by Thorin Klosowski of the Westword magazine as "two Beach Boys recordings [playing] at the same time]" as a result of the analogies. Animal Collective released the "anti-Beach Boys" song "College" from the album Sung Tongs as a response to the initial parallels. Looking for Animal Collective tickets? Look no further than Yadara!
