Alvvays is a Canadian indie pop band from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, that formed in 2011 and currently resides in Toronto, Ontario. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Molly Rankin, keyboardist Kerri MacLellan, bassist Brian Murphy, and drummer Phillipe Trepanier. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 2014 to critical acclaim, and its follow-up, "Antisocialites", was released in 2017. Alvvays' music has been described as "jangly" and "dream pop", with comparisons often made to acts such as the Smiths, Belle and Sebastian, and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. The band released its self-titled debut album on July 22, 2014, on Royal Mountain Records in Canada and Polyvinyl Record Co. in the United States. The album was recorded in Toronto at Great Big Studio with producer John Agnello, who has previously worked with Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, and Kurt Vile.
The album was preceded by the release of the singles "Adult Diversion" and "Archie, Marry Me", both of which received positive reviews from critics. The album's lead single, "Marry Me, Archie", was ranked as the 29th best song of 2014 by Pitchfork Media. The band's second album, "Antisocialites", was released on September 8, 2017. The album was preceded by the release of the singles "In Undertow" and "Dreams Tonite". Alvvays has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, performing at festivals such as Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and SXSW. The band has also opened for acts such as the Pixies, the Decemberists, and Spoon. Alvvays is currently signed to Polyvinyl Record Co. in the United States and Royal Mountain Records in Canada.
In 2018, the band was nominated for a SOCAN Songwriting Prize for "Dreams Tonite," and "Antisocialites" was considered for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize. On July 6, 2022, Alvvays released "Pharmacist," the first single from their third album "Blue Rev" which is set for release on October 21, 2022. Alvvays had no intentions of taking five years to complete their third album, Blue Rev. Nonetheless, the Toronto-based quintet started creating and recording for it shortly after releasing Antisocialites in 2017; a stunning sophomore record that cemented them as leaders of an innovative generation of whip-smart indie rock. Indeed, the Toronto quintet's status atop a new generation of indie rock.
