Adriana Calcanhotto is a Brazilian singer-songwriter who was born on October 3, 1965. Her melancholy songs were frequently placed in the MPB category. She made her debut in 1984 and released her debut studio album in 1990. Adriana's first work, Enguiço (anguish), was published in 1990 and featured mostly covers of well-known MPB (Brazilian pop) songs, some of which she used to sing at restaurants and bars in Porto Alegre as a singer. The title track was the only original composition in the album.
Her first hit was a cover of Caetano Veloso's Naquela Estação. The song became successful due to the it being included in the soundtrack of the primetime soap Rainha da Sucata, which is one of the most watched show in Brazilian television history. Adriana enjoyed the pinnacle of her career with the release of Público in 2000, which was at the turn of the century. For her first live album/DVD, Público, she took a voz-e-violão (voice and guitar) approach meaning there was no band--just the singer with an acoustic guitar following her throughout her entire performance.
Since 2015, Calcanhotto has been an ambassador for Universidade de Coimbra, where she offers lectures on song composition and acts as an artist-in-residence.
