The Turtles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1965. The group is best known for the 1967 hit song "Happy Together", which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The band consists of lead vocalist Howard Kaylan, guitarist Mark Volman, bassist Jim Pons, and drummer John Barbata. The Turtles began their career as a folk-rock group, playing at various clubs around Los Angeles. In 1966 they released their first album “It Ain’t Me Babe” which featured their first single “Let Me Be”. The album was met with critical acclaim and made it to #8 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Later that year they released their second album “You Baby” which included the top 10 hit single “Happy Together”. This song was a major success for the band and became their signature song. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified gold by RIAA. The Turtles continued to release albums throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s including “Turtle Soup” (1969), “Wooden Head” (1970), and “Troublemaker” (1971). They also released numerous singles such as “She'd Rather Be With Me”, “Elenore” and “You Showed Me". Although these songs were not as successful as "Happy Together" they still managed to reach the Top 40 charts in both the US and UK. In 1972 The Turtles disbanded but reunited in 1983 for a reunion tour. Since then they have continued to tour around the world performing at various festivals such as Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Glastonbury Festival. Throughout their career they have won numerous awards including two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Happy Together" (1968) and Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Elenore" (1969).
