Robert Fripp is a British musician, songwriter, record producer, and author best known as the guitarist, creator, and long-time member of King Crimson. He has worked frequently as a session musician and collaborator, notably with David Bowie, Blondie, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Midge Ure, Talking Heads, and David Sylvian.
Fripp was ranked No. 42 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and is a three-time recipient of Guitar Player magazine's "Guitarist of the Year" award. Tied with Andrés Segovia, he also holds the distinction of being designated a "Hero of the Instrument" by a Guitar Player. His work in the late 1970s and early 1980s with Brian Eno defined what has come to be known as "ambient guitar."
In 2000, he formed the League of Crafty Guitarists, and, in 2003, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of King Crimson. In 2009, he was ranked No. 11 on Paste magazine's list of "The 100 Greatest Living Guitarists."
In late 1967, Fripp joined The League of Gentlemen as their guitarist. The band released two singles, "Antique" (1968) and "Sunset" (1969), before splitting up in 1969. Fripp then briefly joined a band called Isolation Ward, which released one self-titled album in 1970.
In 1971, Fripp began working with singer and multi-instrumentalist Andy Summers. The pair worked on a number of projects together, including the score for the film Zootropolis (1971) and the album Bewitched (1972). They also released two albums as a duo, I Advance Masked (1982) and God Save the Queen/Under Heavy Manners (1981).
In late 1971, Fripp was invited to join King Crimson by its founder, drummer, and singer Michael Giles. The band's lineup at the time also included bassist and singer Greg Lake and guitarist and singer Ian McDonald. The new King Crimson released its eponymous debut album in early 1969, which was a mix of original material and reworked blues and jazz covers.
The band's second album, In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), was even more successful, reaching No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 28 on the US Billboard 200. It was also praised by critics for its innovative mix of rock, jazz, classical, and avant-garde influences.
Fripp remained with King Crimson for the next six years, during which time the band released a further four studio albums: Lizard (1970), Islands (1971), Earthbound (1972), and Larks' Tongues in Aspic (1973). They also undertook several lengthy tours, including a stint as the opening act for The
