Dr. Jorge Abner Drexler Prada, better known as Jorge Drexler (born September 21, 1964), is a Uruguayan musician, actor, and otolaryngologist. He is a recipient of the Latin Grammy Award (2004) for Best Singer-Songwriter Album. He has written and performed songs in various genres, often incorporating elements of pop, jazz, rock and roll, bossa nova, and tango. Drexler was born in Montevideo. When he was a child, his family moved to the U.S., where he was raised in Miami and San Antonio. His father, Gerardo, was a doctor specializing in ear, nose, and throat care, while his mother, Jacqueline, was a schoolteacher.
Drexler began playing piano at age eight and guitar at ten. He soon became interested in South American folk music, and he began to perform in local clubs and restaurants. He also became interested in acting, appearing in various plays and films. In the early 1980s, Drexler returned to Uruguay to study medicine at the University of the Republic. He graduated in 1987 and began working as an otolaryngologist at a hospital in Montevideo. Drexler's musical career began in earnest in the early 1990s, when he self-released his first album, Vaivén. The album was well received by the public and critics, and it led to Drexler signing a record deal with BMG Uruguay. He released his second album, Llueve, in 1994. The album was even more successful than his debut, and it earned Drexler a nomination for the Grammy Awards.
In 1996, Drexler released his third album, 12 Segundos de Oscuridad. The album was another critical and commercial success, and it cemented Drexler's position as one of Uruguay's leading musicians. Drexler's fourth album, Sea, was released in 1998. The album was a departure from his previous work, exploring more experimental and avant-garde sounds. Despite its divergent sound, the album was another success, and it won Drexler his first Latin Grammy Award for Best Singer-Songwriter Album.
