Jay and the Americans are a legendary pop-rock band that formed in 1959 in New York City. The original members included John “Jay” Traynor, Kenny Vance, Sandy Deanne, Howie Kane, and Dave Appell. They are best known for their hits such as "Come a Little Bit Closer," "Cara Mia," and "This Magic Moment." The band's first album, She Cried was released in 1962 and featured the hit single of the same name. In 1963, Jay and the Americans released their second album entitled Sands of Time. This album featured two Top 10 singles: "Only in America" and "She Cried." The band followed up with 1964's Live at The Copa which included their No. 1 single "Come a Little Bit Closer." This song was an instant success on radio stations across the country. In 1965, Jay left the group due to creative differences and was replaced by Jay Black.
With Jay Black as lead vocalist, the band released several more albums including 1966's Wax Museum which featured hits such as "Let's Lock The Door (And Throw Away The Key)" and 1967's Sunday & Me which included their hit single "Cara Mia". Throughout the 1970s, Jay and the Americans continued to tour extensively throughout North America and Europe while releasing several albums including 1976's Greatest Hits Live! From 1975-1978 they were a regular act at Las Vegas casinos like Caesars Palace. In 1978 they disbanded but reunited again in 1985 with original members Kenny Vance and Howie Kane alongside new members Marty Sanders (lead vocals) and Jimmy 'Rocco' Cavallo (bass). In 2012, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame joining other iconic acts such as The Beach Boys and The Four Seasons. Today Jay & The Americans continue to perform live all over North America with their 2023 tour kicking off this fall!
