YOB is an American doom metal band from Eugene, Oregon. The trio was formed in 1996 by vocalist and guitarist Mike Scheidt, bassist Isamu Sato, and drummer Travis Foster. Since their inception, YOB has become one of the most influential bands in the genre of doom metal. YOB's debut album Elaborations of Carbon was released in 2002 to critical acclaim. This album showcased the band’s unique blend of sludgy riffs and psychedelic soundscapes that would become their signature sound. The record was followed by Catharsis (2004), which featured a more progressive approach to songwriting than its predecessor. In 2006, YOB released The Unreal Never Lived, a concept album about the journey to enlightenment. This record is considered a classic of the genre and is widely regarded as YOB's masterpiece. The band's fourth album, Atma (2011), marked a shift in their sound towards more atmospheric and introspective territory.
It included songs like "Prepare the Ground" and "Adrift In The Ocean", which are some of YOB's most beloved tracks to date. After taking a four-year hiatus, YOB returned with Clearing The Path To Ascend (2014). This was another critically acclaimed release that saw them further refine their sound with its heavy yet melodic riffs and soaring solos. In 2017, YOB released their seventh studio album Our Raw Heart which earned them widespread recognition as one of the best albums of 2018 according to many publications including Pitchfork and Rolling Stone Magazine who both gave it perfect scores! This record also won them two awards at the 2019 Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance ("Ablaze") and Best Rock Album ("Our Raw Heart").
