Michael Bøgballe, Asger Mygind, and Nicolai Mogensen started Vola in 2006 in Copenhagen, Denmark. They mixed progressive metal with electronic sounds, taking cues from bands like Tool and Meshuggah. Their early releases, like the Homesick demo (2010), showed off their unique sound. Vola quickly became known in Denmark's underground scene because they were trained in both classical instruments and electronic production. This helped them develop a unique, experimental style of songwriting and live performance.
Inmazes, Vola's first album, came out in 2015 and was a big hit around the world. It had hits like "Smartfriend" and "Ghosts." The album reached the charts in Denmark and was well received by Prog Magazine. The band played at festivals like Roadburn and ProgPower Europe, where they gained a lot of fans. Their work with producer Tue Madsen and their precise, atmospheric sound helped them put out three albums, tour Europe and North America, and become known for their technically impressive but emotionally powerful live shows.
The 2021 album Witness cemented Vola's reputation with songs like "24 Light-Years" and "Head Mounted Sideways" that stood out. Their live shows are immersive, with synchronized visuals, changing lights, and exciting crowd interaction.
