About Underoath

Formed in 1997 in Tampa, Florida, Underoath stands as one of the most influential and enduring bands in the post-hardcore and alternative rock scenes. Throughout its history, the band has undergone lineup changes and musical evolution, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. The original lineup featured Dallas Taylor (vocals), Luke Morton (bass), and Aaron Gillespie (drums). Their early years were marked by energetic live shows and a rapidly growing fanbase within the burgeoning post-hardcore scene. Underoath's music seamlessly blended aggressive guitar riffs, pummeling drum beats, and emotionally charged vocals. Their breakthrough album, "They're Only Chasing Safety" (2004), showcased a shift in their sound towards a more melodic and accessible direction, driven by the combination of Spencer Chamberlain's harsh vocals and Aaron Gillespie's clean singing.

This marked a pivotal moment in their career, propelling them into the mainstream and earning them critical acclaim. The album's singles like "Reinventing Your Exit" and "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" became anthems of a generation. The Underoath band's subsequent albums, including "Define the Great Line" (2006) and "Lost in the Sound of Separation" (2008), continued to solidify their position in the alternative rock landscape. Their innovative songwriting and willingness to experiment with electronic elements and atmospheric textures set them apart from their peers. "Define the Great Line" in particular received widespread acclaim for its introspective lyrics and intricate musicianship. Over the years, Underoath's dedication to their craft garnered them numerous awards and nominations, including several Grammy nominations.

They consistently demonstrated their ability to evolve and redefine their sound while staying true to their core identity. The departure of Aaron Gillespie in 2010 marked another turning point for the band, leading to a brief hiatus. However, they reunited in 2015, reinvigorated and ready to continue pushing musical boundaries. In 2023, Underoath remains a force to be reckoned with. Their latest album, Voyeurist, displayed a matured sound that drew from their diverse musical journey. The year 2023 has seen Underoath embark on a highly anticipated world tour, celebrating its rich history and showcasing its latest material. Fans spanning generations eagerly gather to experience their electrifying live performances, where the band's energy and passion shine through. The Underoath 2023 tour promises a nostalgic journey through their discography, featuring hits that have become integral parts of the alternative rock canon.

In a 2023 interview, Johnson raised the topic of Voyeurist's album art, attributing its creation to Nate Utesch, an artist and musician based in Fort Wayne, known for spearheading the electronic project Metavari. The focal point of the discussion was the initial connection between Underoath and Nate. Dudley delved into the background, highlighting their longstanding partnership with the creative agency Tension Division. Over the years, this agency has become an integral component of its creative process, particularly in matters of visual expression. As deliberations commenced about the artistic direction for this specific record, they shared some early musical excerpts with the agency. It was within these conversations that Tim aptly coined the phrase "high-definition violence" to encapsulate the album's essence. Empowered by this evocative descriptor, Brandon and Joel at Tension Division were entrusted with the creative reins. The specifics of Nate's introduction into the fold remained somewhat nebulous, yet it was evident that he became a pivotal figure from the very outset. Acting as intermediaries, Brandon and Joel formally introduced the band to Nate, confidently asserting his exceptional skill set. Given the considerable weight carried by Brandon and Joel's endorsement, a sense of implicit trust and collaboration emerged.
