Stryper is an American Christian metal band from Orange County, California. The band was formed in 1983 by brothers Michael and Robert Sweet, along with Oz Fox and Tim Gaines. Stryper gained notoriety for their unique blend of heavy metal music and Christian lyrics. They are widely credited as one of the first bands to bring Christian metal into the mainstream. The band's debut album, Soldiers Under Command, was released in 1985 and was an instant success. It featured hits such as "Soldiers Under Command," "First Love," and "Reach Out." The album achieved gold status in both the US and Canada and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album. Following its success, Stryper released the follow-up albums To Hell With The Devil (1986) and In God We Trust (1988). Both albums featured hit singles such as "Calling on You" and "Always There For You." To Hell With The Devil went platinum in the US while In God We Trust achieved gold status.
In 1991, Stryper released their fourth studio album Against The Law which included the hit single "Two Time Woman." This song peaked at number 16 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and earned them another Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental. After a brief hiatus, Stryper returned to the spotlight with their seventh studio album No More Hell To Pay (2013). This record received critical acclaim from both fans and critics alike for its mix of a classic hard rock sound with modern production techniques. It also earned them a Dove Award for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year in 2014. Throughout their career, Stryper has sold over 10 million records worldwide! They have also been nominated for four Grammy Awards, three Dove Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, one American Music Award, and one People's Choice Award.
