Protest the Hero is a Canadian progressive metal group from Whitby, Ontario. The band originally known as Happy Go Lucky changed their name to Protest the Hero and released their debut EP, Search for the Truth, in 2002. In 2005, Protest the Hero released their debut album Kezia on Underground Operations Records, an independent Toronto-based label. The background story of Kezia is a concept album based on the trial of Louis Riel. The trial and execution of Louis Riel is often cited as one of the great injustices in Canadian history.
Protest the Hero's second album, Fortress, was released on January 29, 2008, by Vagrant Records in North America and by Underground Operations in Canada. The fortress is a concept album, with the story being about a character named Ryder who is taken prisoner and held in a foreign land. The album was well received by critics and fans alike, debuting at number 52 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the highest charting Canadian metal album in the United States at that time.
On June 16, 2009, it was announced that Protest the Hero had signed with Atlantic Records. The deal was reportedly worth close to $1 million US dollars. This made them the first metal band to sign with the label in over a decade. Their third album, Scurrilous, was released on March 22, 2011. The album was once again a concept album, this time focusing on celebrity culture and the worship of celebrities.
On January 28, 2013, it was announced that Protest the Hero had parted ways with Atlantic Records. The band crowdfunded their fourth album, Volition, through Indiegogo, raising over $350,000. The album was released on October 29, 2013.
On April 8, 2015, it was announced that Protest the Hero would be going on an indefinite hiatus after their current tour. The band has not officially broken up, but has stated that they will not be touring or releasing new music in the foreseeable future.
