OM is a doom metal band from San Francisco, California. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist Timmy Stokes, guitarist Mike Scheidt, and bassist Dana Ortt. They have released five studio albums and one live album. The band's name is derived from the H. P. Lovecraft story "The Call of Cthulhu". The debut CD Variations on a Theme features musical structures from Om's early compositions that are reminiscent of Tibetan and Byzantine chant. The name of the band itself is derived from the Hindu idea of Om, which alludes to the universe's inherent vibration. Since Pilgrimage, every album's cover has featured Eastern Orthodox iconography. Om gave a performance in Jerusalem on December 5, 2007. A section of that show, titled Live at Jerusalem by Southern Lord, was issued on 12" vinyl and lasted for more than five hours. The band's 2007 album Pilgrimage was selected as the "Underground Album of the Year" by Mojo Magazine. Om is renowned for having performed two shows lasting many hours in the same year, with one performance in Jerusalem reportedly lasting between four and six hours. Chris Hakius quit the group on January 31, 2008, and was replaced by Grails drummer Emil Amos. Songs that would later become "Gebel Barkal" and "Thebes" were performed live during Hakius' final tour. God is Good, Om's fourth full-length studio album, was produced by Steve Albini and released on September 29, 2009, via Drag City. Advaitic Songs, the group's fifth studio album, was made available on July 24, 2012, by Drag City. It received favorable reviews. The group performed at the final All Tomorrow's Parties vacation camp festival in Camber Sands, England, in November 2013.
