Nightwish is a Finnish metal band that combines elements of symphonic music with heavy metal. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. Jukka Nevalainen soon joined the band as their drummer, and then Sami Vänskä replaced them after Angels Fall First (1997) was released. In 2001, Marko Hietala took over for Vänskä and also became the male vocalist- a role previously filled by Holopainen or guest singers. Nightwish became prominent in their home country following the release of Angels Fall First, but they didn't achieve wider success until later with Oceanborn (1998), Wishmaster (2000), and Century Child (2002). Once, their 2004 album, sold more than a million copies and was the band's stepping-stone into the American music industry."Wish I Had an Angel", released in 2004 as a single, became one of their biggest hits in America.
The song received MTV airplay and was included on three US film soundtracks to promote their North American tour. The band released three more singles and two music videos for Once, as well as a re-recording of "Sleeping Sun" for the compilation album, Highest Hopes: The Best of Nightwish (2005) before vocalist Tarja Turunen was dismissed in October 2005. Her last performance with Nightwish was during a concert recorded for the live album/DVD End of an Era. After the concert, the other members informed Turunen via an open letter that she was no longer a member of Nightwish. They are now joined by a new vocalist, Floor Jansen. Jansen's background in rock bands ReVamp and After Forever gives her considerable experience and credentials in the music world. So far, the band has published more than 20 albums, one of which is 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful' from 2015.
