Meshuggah's sound has been characterized as progressive metal, math metal, and groove metal with drummer Tomas Haake, Fredrik Thordendal on Guitars, Jens Kidman as Lead Vocals, Mårten Hagström on Guitars, and Dick Lövgren on Bass. Since its formation in the college town of Umeå in northern Sweden, the band has released eight studio albums, six EPs, and eight music videos. They release their debut album, ‘Contradictions Collapse' in 1991. Meshuggah has enjoyed success with its album sales; all of the band's studio albums since Chaosphere (1998) have sold more than 100,000 copies, and they have been nominated multiple times for Grammy Awards. Meshuggah is renowned for its avant-garde musical aesthetic, intricate song structures, and polyrhythms. They achieved notoriety as important acts in the extreme underground music scene, had an impact on contemporary metal bands, and developed a cult following. The group was named by Alternative Press as the most significant band in metal and one of the ten most significant hard rock and heavy metal bands. The group served as a source of inspiration for the djent subgenre in the late 2000s. Meshuggah received two Swedish Grammis Award nominations for their albums Catch Thirtythree in 2006 and obZen in 2009, respectively. The group's song "Clockworks" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2018 in the "Best Metal Performance" category. The group played at several international events, including Ozzfest and Download, and they also went on the "Ophidian Trek" and the "obZen world tour" from 2008 to 2010.
