The group was formed in 1994 under the name Burn the Priest and consists of John Campbell on bass, Randy Blythe as a vocalist, Mark Morton and Willie Adler on guitar, and Art Cruz drumming. They are considered a significant part of the new wave of American heavy metal music. The band's debut album, New American Gospel (2000), was received with mixed reviews. The second and third albums, As the Palaces Burn (2003) and Sacrament (2006), both won Grammy Awards for "Best Metal Performance". The fourth album, Wrath (2009), debuted at number 2 on Billboard 200 chart and became their highest-charting release in the United States. The band's fifth album, Resolution (2012), debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and was the first to be produced by Josh Wilbur.

The band's eighth album, Resolution, was released on December 15, 2018. The album received positive reviews from music critics and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, making it the band's fourth consecutive album to debut in the top three positions. The band has been nominated for five Grammy Awards, winning one for the song "Redneck" from Sacrament. The band has also been nominated for three American Music Awards and has won one of them.
