Jerry Cantrell is an American musician, best known as the founder, lead guitarist, and vocalist of the rock band Alice in Chains. He was born on March 18, 1966, in Tacoma Washington, and started playing guitar at a young age under the influence of his father who was also a musician. Today, he has two albums to his name with Alice in Chains - Facelift (1990) and Dirt (1992) - as well as four solo albums beginning with Boggy Depot (1998). Cantrell's musical style is characterized by heavy riffs, melodic moments, and intricate harmonies. One of the main influences for his guitar playing has been Led Zeppelin which can be heard in many of his riffs and solos. His lyrics often explore matters such as existentialism and addiction with songs like "Them Bones" from Dirt serving as great examples of this focus.
Alice in Chains accumulated significant critical acclaim over their career resulting in several awards including a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1995 for "Get Born Again," nods from Kerrang! magazine's Music Awards, a Golden God Award at Metal Hammer magazine's Golden Gods Awards Ceremony 2010, and more recently Metal Band Of The Year at the 2017 Revolver Music Awards show.
