The French heavy metal band Gojira was founded in 1996 as Godzilla. The current lineup of the band, consisting of brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier on lead vocals and rhythm guitar respectively, Christian Andreu on lead guitar, and Jean-Michel Labadie on bass, has been unchanged since 2001 when the band changed its name. Since their debut, Gojira has been known for their boundary-pushing style of progressive and technical death metal. Their lyrics are heavily spiritual and philosophical, with an environmental focus. The band went "from the utmost obscurity during the first half of their career to widespread global recognition in the second". Gojira's reputation as a leading French metal band was established by their first two albums, Terra Incognita (2001) and The Link (2003), as well as their powerful live performances. The follow-up album, The Way of All Flesh (2008), charted on the Billboard 200, and Gojira later launched their first headlining tour outside of their home country. The band continues to tour globally and has released more albums, including L'Enfant Sauvage (2012) and Magma (2016). Gojira's latest album, Fortitude (2021), is set to be released in April 2021. The title track has already been released and received positive reviews from fans and critics alike. Though their sound is aggressive, it is also melodic due to the varying vocal style. Their lyrics usually focus on environmental activism-- in fact, the band themselves cooperate with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in order to raise awareness and protect marine life.
