Emperor, the Norwegian black metal band, has been one of the most influential bands in the genre since its formation in 1991. The group is composed of Ihsahn (vocals, guitar), Samoth (guitar), and Faust (drums). Emperor's music combines elements of classical music and symphonic metal with extreme metal and black metal. Their first album, In the Nightside Eclipse, was released in 1994 and is considered a classic of black metal. It features some of their most iconic songs such as "I Am the Black Wizards" and "Inno A Satana". This album earned them numerous awards including Spellemannprisen for Best Metal Album in 1995. Emperor's second album, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, was released in 1997 and is considered their masterpiece. It introduced more complex song structures and featured epic tracks such as "Curse You All Men!" and "The Wanderer". The band also gained international recognition with this album, performing live shows all over Europe. They also toured with other popular bands such as Slayer and Morbid Angel. In 2001, Emperor released their third album titled IX Equilibrium which showcased a more progressive sound compared to their previous albums.
This record included songs such as "An Elegy of Icaros" and "The Acclamation of Bonds". It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2002. Emperor has also released multiple EPs throughout their career including Emperial Live Ceremony (2000) and Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise (2001). They have also collaborated with various artists on projects such as Sculptor Of Flesh (with Arcturus) and Beyond Sensory Experience (with Zyklon). Emperor disbanded in 2001 but reunited again in 2006 to perform at Wacken Open Air Festival. Since then they have performed numerous shows around the world including headline performances at festivals like Inferno Festival, Hellfest Open Air Festival, Graspop Metal Meeting, etc. Now after two decades since their formation, Emperor is back with a new tour scheduled for 2023!
