Delain is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002 by former Within Temptation keyboardists Martijn Westerholt and Charlotte Wessels. The band's initial lineup included Westerholt, Wessels, bassist Rob van der Loo, and drummer Sander Zoer. Delain has released five studio albums to date: Lucidity (2006), April Rain (2009), We Are the Others (2012), The Human Contradiction (2014), and Moonbathers (2016), all of which have been met with critical acclaim. Delain's music is characterized by its cinematic soundscapes and melodic hooks that draw on influences from gothic rock, classical music, and progressive metal. Their discography includes some of the most popular symphonic metal songs such as "We Are the Others", "Frozen", "Suckerpunch" and "The Gathering". Furthermore, their songs often explore themes of science fiction, fantasy, horror, religion, war, and politics.
Delain has won multiple awards for their work over the years including Best Album at the Metal Hammer Awards in 2013 for We Are the Others. They have also earned nominations for Best Live Band at both the Metal Hammer Awards in 2015 as well as at Prog Magazine's Progressive Music Awards in 2017.
