Deicide is an American death metal band formed in Tampa, Florida in 1987. The band rose to mainstream success with their 1993 album Legion, and are credited as the second death metal band (after Death) to break into the mainstream. Deicide's first two albums, Deicide and Legion, are considered classics in the genre.
After responding to an advertisement in a local music magazine, guitarist Brian Hoffman launched Deicide in Tampa, Florida on July 21, 1987. Hoffman recruited singer Glen Benton, drummer Steve Asheim and bassist Keith Stewart. The band's first line-up was short-lived; Mark Simpson soon replaced Stewart, while Dave Suzuki joined as the new guitarist after Hoffman left the band due to creative differences.
The following year, Deicide released their self-titled debut album, which is considered a classic in the death metal genre. The album was recorded and mixed in only six days, and featured artwork by Ed Repka.
In 1992, Deicide released their third album, Legion. The album was once again met with critical acclaim, and is considered one of the band's best albums.
The following year, the band released their fourth album, Once upon the Cross. The album was once again met with positive reviews, and featured more complex songwriting than previous albums.
In 1996, Deicide released their fifth album, Serpents of the Light. The album was met with mixed reviews, but still managed to sell well.
The band's sixth album, In the Minds of Evil, was released in 2013. The album was once again met with mixed reviews, but was praised for its return to the band's death metal roots.
The Village Voice announced on October 9, 2014, that Deicide has begun writing fresh material for their eleventh studio album. Deicide provided an album update on March 10, 2017, saying, "The new record is almost complete, right now its down to scheduling, this run of shows were setting up is to introduce and work in our new guitarist Mark English, that and I need a break from this thing called Florida..." The band's brief May U.S. tour was also announced. On September 14, 2018, the album Overtures of Blasphemy was published.
