Between the Buried and Me, often abbreviated as BTBAM, is an American progressive metal band from Raleigh, North Carolina. Formed in 2000 by vocalist Tommy Rogers and guitarist Paul Waggoner, the band has released seven studio albums to date. Their sound combines elements of progressive rock, metalcore, ambient music, and jazz fusion. The band's name comes from a line in the Counting Crows song "Ghost Train". BTBAM's first album was released in 2002 on Victory Records. Entitled "The Silent Circus," it showcased their unique blend of metalcore and progressive rock influences. The album was met with positive reviews from fans and critics alike, and it helped to establish them as one of the most innovative bands in the metal scene. The following year saw the release of their second album "The Great Misdirect", which further solidified their position as one of the leading progressive metal bands. With this record they began to experiment more with their sound, incorporating elements of jazz fusion into their music. Since then BTBAM has gone on to release five more studio albums: Colors (2007), The Parallax II: Future Sequence (2012), Coma Ecliptic (2015), Automata I & II (2018), and The Great Misdirect: Live at Red Rocks (2019).
Each album has seen them continue to push boundaries within the genre, experimenting with different instrumentation and styles while still maintaining a core sound that is unmistakably BTBAM. They are also known for their intense live shows which often feature extended jam sessions between songs. In addition to releasing seven studio albums, BTBAM has also won several awards throughout its career including a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for its single "Lay Your Ghosts To Rest" in 2011. They have also been nominated for numerous other awards such as Best International Band at Kerrang! Awards in both 2007 and 2009 as well as Best Album at Revolver Golden Gods Awards in 2015 for Coma Ecliptic.
