At the Gates is a Swedish death metal band from Gothenburg, formed in 1990. The band's members are vocalist Tomas Lindberg, guitarists Anders Björler and Jonas Stålhammar, drummer Adrian Erlandsson and bassist Martín Larsson.
At the Gates is credited as a major influential force in the Scandinavian death metal scene, particularly in its Gothenburg branch. They were also the first death metal band to break through to mainstream media and commercial success in their home country. The band was initially active from 1990 to 1996, when they broke up. In 2007, At the Gates reunited for a one-off performance at Kåren in Gothenburg. They have since continued to tour throughout Europe and the United States.
The band was founded in 1990 by Lindberg and Stålhammar, who recruited bassist Erik Gustafsson, guitarist Alf Svensson and drummer Jens Näsström. The band recorded two demos, Gardens of Grief (1990) and Within the fall of man (1991), before releasing their debut album, The Red in the Sky Is Ours, in 1992. Gustafsson left the band soon after the recording of the album and was replaced by Martin Larsson.
At the Gates' second album, With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, was released in 1993 to critical acclaim. The album featured a more experimental and progressive sound than its predecessor, and is considered a landmark of the Scandinavian death metal scene.
In 1994, At the Gates released their third album, Terminal Spirit Disease. The album was another step forward in the band's evolution, featuring a more atmospheric and emotive sound.
At the Gates' final album, Slaughter of the Soul, was released in 1995. The album saw the band's sound move even further away from death metal, towards a more melodic and accessible style of heavy metal.
After the release of Slaughter of the Soul, At the Gates disbanded in 1996. In the years following the breakup, Lindberg and Björler went on to form The Haunted, while Erlandsson and Näsström formed Cradle of Filth.
In 2007, At the Gates reunited for a one-off performance at the Gothenburg stop ofMetallica's European tour. The show was recorded and released as the live album Suicide Nation.
In 2010, the band announced that they were working on new material. The following year, they released a new song, "At War with Reality", as well as an EP of the same name.
In 2014, At the Gates released their fifth studio album, At War with Reality. The album was met with critical acclaim, and saw the band returning to their death metal roots.
