About Apocalyptica

Apocalyptica is a Finnish heavy metal band from Helsinki, founded in 1993 by classmates Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Max Lilja. While the band started with a classic line-up of cellos, their sound has evolved to include elements of thrash metal, progressive metal, and neoclassical. Throughout its history, Apocalyptica has achieved multiple awards nominations, and wins for its music, selling over four million albums worldwide. To date, they have released nine studio albums: "Play Bach" (1996), "Inquisition Symphony" (1998), "Cult" (2000), "Reflections" (2003), "Apocalyptica" (2005), "Worlds Collide" (2007), 7th Symphony (2010), 'Plays Metallica By Four Cellos' (2005) and 'Shadowmaker' (2015). In addition to these releases, they also released two live albums consisting of various recordings taken from their tours and an EP called “Path Vol. 2” that was released in 2004. Throughout the past twenty years, Apocalyptica has been touring continuously all around the world performing shows that feature classical pieces as well as their own interpretations of thrash metal songs by acts like Metallica and Slayer. Performances have included European festivals such as Rock am Ring and Graspop Metal Meeting; some of which were even broadcast on television stations across Europe. They’ve also performed alongside artists such as Metallica, Gojira, and Marilyn Manson, amongst others. Additionally, the band has scored several movies such as Resident Evil: Apocalypse; for which they received an award for Best Music at the Sitges Film Festival in 2004. Apocalyptica has achieved multiple awards and recognitions throughout its history, including four Top 10 albums on the Finnish Albums Chart and numerous award nominations. In 2002, they were nominated for two Brit Awards. In 2003, they were nominated for a Grammy Award, and in 2004 their album “Plays Metallica By Four Cellos” was certified Gold. Additionally, in 2004 their song "Path Vol. 2" won the Best Music award at the Sitges Film Festival. The band has also had international success with four of their albums reaching Top 10 Chart positions in multiple countries such as Austria, France, Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, Apocalyptica is one of the few metal acts to have performed twice at the opening ceremony of an Olympic Games; both times at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014 and 2018 respectively.
