About Anthrax

The band was formed in New York City in 1981 by rhythm guitarist Scott Ian, and bassist Dan Lilker, who played as The Fez, Charlie Benante, and Frank Bello. The band is credited with creating the thrash metal genre during the 1980s, and it is part of the "Big Four" along with Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. They were also among the first thrash metal bands from the East Coast (alongside Overkill and Nuclear Assault). According to Billboard, Anthrax has sold 2.5 million records in the United States since 1991, with worldwide sales of 10 million. In the late 1980s, Anthrax teamed up with rap group Public Enemy on their iconic track "Bring The Noise." This remarkable collaboration solidified them as trailblazers in musical fusion. In 2012, they made history yet again when NASA used one of their songs, 'Got the Time', to wake up the Mars Rover; making Anthrax the very first metal band to have its music played on a different planet! According to Nielsen SoundScan, Anthrax has sold 2.5 million records in the United States since 1991, with worldwide sales of 10 million. Four of Anthrax's studio albums have received gold certifications from the RIAA, including their third full-length record Among the Living (1987), which confirmed the band's position as one of thrash metal's most successful acts. In 2010, Anthrax brought back their lead singer Joey Belladonna, who starred in the iconic album Among the Living. Afterward, they released Worship Music eight years later - a record that saw them reinventing their intense thrash metal sound and re-establishing themselves as one of the greatest acts in heavy metal music. The band has also earned two Grammy Award nominations, both for the song "Bring the Noise", which was a collaboration with Public Enemy. The pair found common ground in their shared love of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal music. Ian has toyed with comic writing and was asked by DC to write a series for Lobo, an antihero who rains havoc wherever he goes. For those that aren't familiar with the character, Lobo is an ultra-violent and foul-mouthed mercenary who rains devastation on whatever town he visits, making him an anti-hero in some sense. Given Ian's enthusiasm for comics, it was only natural that he would collaborate with the rock star. When asked how he planned to write the book, he drew parallels between Lobo's frenzied qualities and metal's personality — a clever match since it allowed the rock star to work with little or no restrictions for the character!
