About Amon Amarth

Amon Amarth is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Tumba, formed in 1992. At the core of this group are Johan Hegg, Ted Lundström, Olavi Mikkonen, Johan Söderberg, and Fredrik Andersson. The band takes its name from the Sindarin name of Mount Doom, a volcano in J. R. R. Tolkien′s Middle-earth. He has released ten studio albums, one compilation album, one live debut album, and twelve music videos. After Scum released their groundbreaking demo in 1991 and underwent a transformation, Amon Amarth emerged on the scene with their own debut demonstration - "Thor Arise" - two years later. In 1996, the band signed with Pulverised Records and released their debut MCD, Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds. This studio album sold an impressive 6,000 copies! In early 1999, Scum changed its name to Amon Amarth (after the Sindarin name of Mount Doom, a volcano in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth). The band also recorded and released The Avenger later that year, which was well-received by fans and critics alike. Anders Hansson left the band in May 2000 and was replaced by Johan Söderberg. With the addition of Söderberg, he began to rely less on Viking themes and more on the concept of battle. This was evident on their third album, The Crusher, released in 2001, which was inspired by Walter Lord's book A Night to Remember (1956), about the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The Crusher went on to sell over 150,000 copies worldwide. In 2002, Amon Amarth released Versus the World, which was once again based on a Lord book, this time The Fall of the West (1965), about the collapse of the Roman Empire. The album peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and was very well received by critics. Amon Amarth's fourth album, Fate of Norns, was released in 2004. It was inspired by Michael Moorcock's novel The Eternal Champion (1970) and follows the story of a man who is reincarnated throughout history to fight evil. The album peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and received positive reviews from critics. In 2006, he released With Oden on Our Side. The album was once again based on a Moorcock novel, this time The Quest for Tanelorn (1975). It tells the story of a man who is searching for a lost city. The album peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and received positive reviews from critics. Amon Amarth's sixth album, Twilight of the Thunder God, was released in 2008. It is based on the Ragnarök legend and tells the story of the Norse gods' final battle with the giants. The album peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and received positive reviews from critics. In 2011, he released Surtur Rising. The album is based on the fire giant Surtr, who is prophesied to kill the gods in Ragnarök. Amon Amarth album peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and received positive reviews from critics. Amon Amarth released Deceiver of the Gods. The album is based on the Norse god Loki and tells the story of his betrayal of the gods. The album peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard 200, and received positive reviews from critics. Amon Amarth's ninth album, Jomsviking. It is a concept album about the Jomsvikings, a band of mercenary warriors in the Middle Ages.
