Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna, known professionally as Rubén Blades, is a Panamanian musician, singer, composer, actor, activist, and politician. He has been an influential figure in Latin music since the late 1970s and has won numerous awards throughout his career. He was born in Panama City in 1948 and grew up with a strong love for music. His father was an avid collector of Caribbean records and introduced him to the world of salsa music. Blades began to write songs at an early age and released his first album in 1976 titled "Amor y Control." This album was well-received by critics and fans alike and marked the beginning of his illustrious career. In the following years, Blades released several successful albums such as "Escenas," "Canciones del Solar de los Aburridos," "Antecedente," and "Maestra Vida." All these albums were very successful commercially and critically acclaimed. Each one featured Blades' signature style of blending traditional salsa with elements from other genres such as jazz, rock, pop, African rhythms, funk, reggae, bolero, tango, merengue, and more.
In addition to his musical success, he also achieved great success as an actor appearing in films like The Mambo Kings (1992), The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), and Crossover Dreams (1985). He also wrote several screenplays including “The Last Fight” (1993) which earned him a nomination for Best Screenplay at the Goya Awards that year. His work has been recognized by many organizations including the Latin Recording Academy which awarded him with two-lifetime achievement awards in 2006 & 2008 respectively. Blades continues to tour around the world performing his classic hits while also introducing new material from his latest album “Son de Panamá” which was released in 2020. He will be embarking on a worldwide tour that will take him all over North America before heading to Europe where he will perform and it ends back home in Panama City.
