Mœnia is a Mexican electronic/synthpop/ambient group. Formed in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 2002, the group's music is a blend of synthpop and ambient genres with Latin and Mediterranean influences.
The group was founded in 1985 while the members were junior high students. Their first public performance was at a school talent show, where they performed a cover of the song "Mad World" by Tears for Fears.
The group's name comes from the Latin word mœnia, meaning "walls" or "barriers". The band has said that the name reflects their feeling of being "trapped" in Guadalajara.
A new album by Moenia, Solar, was released in 2006; it has a more 1980s electropop aesthetic and has more electric guitar sounds. features the song "Me Equivoque," a duet with Denisse Guerrero (of Belanova). The first single from the album, "Ni Tu Ni Nadie," was a club hit in Mexico.
The band's fourth studio album, Futuro Ex Novio, was released in 2009. The album's lead single, "No Puedo Olvidarme de Ti" peaked at number one on the Billboard Latin Pop Airplay chart.
New tunes from the Moenia album, which was released on September 23, 2016, are produced by Armando Vila. As for the album title, according to keyboardist Alex Midi, the concept consisted of the combination of original written compositions along with interpolated works of other artists' songs, and thus the term Fantom was stapled to that of what they consider to be "ghostly apparitions" of one song within another. At first, many listeners assumed the album would be a series of either mashups, covers, or samplings.
The group has toured extensively throughout Mexico and Latin America, and has also performed in the United States and Europe.
