Fernando Villalona, also known as El Mayimbe, is a Dominican singer and songwriter who has been in the music industry for over four decades. He has released several albums that have become classics in the Latin music genre. His career started in 1978 when he released his first album “Villalona” which featured hits like "Quisqueya La Tierra De Mis Amores" and "La Mujer Que Yo Quiero". This album was an instant success and earned him the title of “El Mayimbe” which translates to “The Great One”. In 1988, Villalona released his second album titled “Mentiroso” which included hits such as "Señora" and "Tu Eres Mi Tesoro". This album was even more successful than his first one and earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Tropical Latin Album. After this success, he released several other albums including “La Leyenda Continua” (1991), “Fernando Villalona Vol 2” (1995), and “Mi Nuevo Amanecer” (2000).
He also collaborated with many great artists such as Juan Luis Guerra, Marc Anthony, and Celia Cruz on various projects throughout his career. Throughout his career, Fernando Villalona has achieved numerous awards including multiple Grammy nominations, three Latin Grammy Awards for Best Merengue Album in 2005, 2011, and 2015 respectively, three Billboard Music Video Awards between 1996-1999; two MTV Video Music Latino America awards between 1996-1997; two International Reggae & World Music Award nominations between 2002-2003; one ALMA Award nomination in 2003; one ALMA Award win for Outstanding Musical Performance by a Duo or Group at the ALMA Awards Show in 2007; one People's Choice Award win in 2012 among many others.
