Café con Leche is one of the most iconic rock bands in Costa Rica. Founded in the early 1980s, Café con Leche began as a three-piece group comprised of singer/guitarist Carlos “Chapu” Piedra, bassist Ricardo “Ricky” González, and drummer/percussionist Luis “Lucho” Hernández. The band quickly gained popularity for their unique sound that combined elements of traditional Latin American music with rock and roll. Throughout their career, Café con Leche has released six studio albums, two live albums, and numerous singles. Their debut album, Café con Leche (1986), was an instant hit and marked the beginning of their success in Costa Rica and beyond. In 1988 they released their second album, La Vida es un Carnaval (Life is a Carnival), which featured some of their most popular songs such as "La Vida" and "La Rumba".
Throughout the years Cafe Con Leche has received several awards including Best Rock Album at the Costa Rican Music Awards in 1987 and Best Rock Band at the Latin American Music Awards in 1989. They have toured extensively throughout Central America and Europe with stops in Mexico City, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, and more. In addition to performing live shows, they have also been involved in various humanitarian causes throughout Costa Rica. In 2018 Cafe Con Leche celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special concert at Parque Nacional La Sabana featuring some of their greatest hits from over the years. The event was attended by thousands of fans who sang along to every song while enjoying a spectacular light show created especially for them. The band is still going strong today with plans to release a new album later this year as well as embark on a Cafe Con Leche tour 2023!
