Bebel Gilberto is a Brazilian-American singer-songwriter and producer. She is the daughter of João Gilberto and singer Miúcha. She has released several solo albums, as well as working with other artists including Caetano Veloso, Stanley Jordan, and David Byrne. Her music often combines elements of bossa nova, electronica, and trip hop. Gilberto was born in New York City to Brazilian parents. Her father João Gilberto is a singer and guitar player who helped pioneer the bossa nova style of music. Her mother Miúcha was also a singer. Gilberto began her musical career singing with her mother on stage. She later toured Europe with her father and Caetano Veloso. In the early 1990s, Gilberto moved to Los Angeles and began working with producer Marius de Vries on her debut album, Bebel Gilberto (1996). The album featured a mix of bossa nova and trip hop. It was a critical and commercial success, and launched Gilberto's solo career.
Gilberto has released four solo albums: Bebel Gilberto (1996), Tanto Tempo (2000), Momento (2007), and All in One (2009). She has also collaborated with other artists on a number of occasions. In 2003, she worked with Stanley Jordan on the album Dreaming of You. In 2004, she collaborated with David Byrne on the album Live at Carnegie Hall. Her father's influence can be heard in her use of bossa nova rhythms, while her use of electronica and trip hop elements give her music a modern edge.
