Three 6 Mafia, is an American hip hop group from Memphis, Tennessee. The group was founded in 1991 by DJ Paul, Juicy J and Lord Infamous. The original members also included Gangsta Boo and Koopsta Knicca. Three 6 Mafia has been described as one of the most influential groups in hip hop history. The group's debut album, Mystic Stylez, was released in 1995. It is considered by many to be a classic in the southern hip hop genre. The album was followed by a string of successful releases, including the 1997 album Da Unbreakables and the 1999 double album When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1. In 2000, the group won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" from the film Hustle & Flow. Over the past two decades, Three 6 Mafia has released nine studio albums and has been nominated for five Grammy Awards. The group has also been featured in numerous films and television shows. In 2012, the group was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
