Gangstagrass is an American bluegrass and hip-hop musical group, best known for the theme song of FX television program "Justified". The ensemble is formed and led by Brooklyn producer Rench (Oscar Owens), who blends real bluegrass with rap to create a new genre. The group has released three albums, Gangstagrass (2007), Lightning on the String (2009), and Broken Hearts and Stolen Money (2012).
The group's name is a combination of "gangster" and "grass", referring to both the bluegrass music they play and the tough image of many of their songs' lyrics. Gangstagrass' music has been featured in several television shows and films, including the FX show "Justified", for which they recorded the theme song. They have also toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Gangstagrass was formed in 2006 by Brooklyn-based producer Rench (Oscar Owens), who had been working on a hip-hop album that incorporated bluegrass samples. After finishing the album, he realized that he wanted to create an entire album of music that blended the two genres. He recruited several bluegrasses and hip-hop musicians, including rappers MC Frontalot and R-SON The Voice of Reason, and banjo player Daly Baker.
The group's debut album, Gangstagrass, was released in 2007. The album's lead single, "Long Gone", received heavy airplay on Sirius Satellite Radio's Bluegrass Junction channel. The song tells the story of a man who is longing for his lost love, and features the chorus: "I'm long gone, like a freight train rolling down the track / I'm long gone, and I ain't never coming back."
The album's second single, "Riding the Midnight Train", is a more traditional bluegrass song, with lyrics about a man who is leaving his home and family behind to go work on the railroad. The song was featured in an episode of the FX show "Justified", and has been used in several other television shows and films.
Gangstagrass' second album, Lightning on the String, was released in 2009. The album's lead single, "I'm Gone", is a faster-paced bluegrass song with rap verses from MC Frontalot and R-SON The Voice of Reason. The song tells the story of a man who is leaving his home and family behind to go work on the railroad.
