Fantastic Negrito was born Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz in Oakland, California, in 1968, and grew up listening to blues, R&B, and gospel music. He trained as a classical pianist and was educated by local jazz artists before developing a style that combines raw passion with current rhythm. After a decade-long absence and a life-changing car accident, he relaunched himself as Fantastic Negrito in 2014, combining powerful vocals with expressive guitar work and narration that represents his own journey and the challenges of his community.

His breakout album, The Last Days of Oakland (2014), won a Grammy in 2017 for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Later releases, including Please Don't Be Dead (2018) and Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? (2020), topped the Billboard Blues charts. He has performed at SXSW, Glastonbury, and the Newport Folk Festival, partnering with musicians such as Mickey Hart and Thundercat and receiving numerous honours and critical acclaim for resurrecting contemporary blues.
