Dessa is an American rapper, singer, writer, and former record executive from Minneapolis. She has been a part of the Minneapolis-based hip-hop collective Doomtree since 2005. Her career has seen her buck genres and defies expectations with performances at Lollapalooza and other major festivals. Dessa's music combines wit, tenderness, and poetic sensibility to rare effect as she spins delicate and charged stories that she animates with her powerful voice. Dessa released her debut album A Badly Broken Code in 2010 which was followed by Castor, The Twin in 2012. In 2017 she released Chime which was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards. Her fourth studio album My Own Devices was released in 2018 to critical acclaim and featured singles such as "Good Grief" and "Fire Drills". In 2019 she released her fifth studio album Sound the Bells which included tracks like "5 Out of 6" and "Velodrome". In addition to her albums, Dessa has also released several EPs including Parts of Speech (2013), Call Off Your Ghost (2014), Halfway Down the Sky (2015), and The Choir EP (2020).
She has also collaborated with artists such as Lazerbeak, Aesop Rock, P.O.S., Astronautalis, Cecil Otter, Sims, Mike Mictlan, Paper Tiger, Greg Grease & Allan Kingdom on various projects throughout her career. Throughout her career, Dessa has won multiple awards including City Pages' Artist of the Year Award in 2011 and Minnesota Music Awards' Hip Hop Artist of the Year Award in 2013 & 2014. She has also been nominated for several awards including two Grammy Awards for Best Rap/Sung Performance ("Calls" featuring Anderson .Paak & GoldLink) in 2020 and Best Music Video ("Fight or Flight" featuring Lauryn Hill) in 2021. In 2023, Dessa will be embarking on a tour across North America to promote her latest album TITS ON THE MOON which was released earlier this year. The tour will include stops in cities such as Seattle WA; Portland OR; San Francisco CA; Los Angeles CA; Denver CO; Austin TX; Chicago IL; Toronto ON; Montreal QC; Boston MA; Philadelphia PA; New York NY; Washington DC; Atlanta GA; Nashville TN; Dallas TX among others.
