Thunder are an English hard rock band from London. Formed in 1969, the group originally featured guitarist and songwriter Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward. The band has since experienced multiple lineup changes, with a total of twenty-two former members. Terraplane was dissolved by singer Danny Bowes and guitarist Luke Morley on January 1 of 1989 at the group's annual New Year's Day meeting in order to start a new band called Thunder. The two had already been writing songs for what would become the debut Thunder album. Morley brought in drummer Gary James, who he had previously played with in Terraplane, and the three of them started jamming. They eventually recruited bassist Mark Knotcott and singer Danny Vaughn, both of whom were recommended to Morley by a mutual friend. The band's name was inspired by a newspaper headline that Morley saw which read "Thunder in the East, Thunder in the West". The group began recording their debut album in January of 1989 with producer Andy Taylor. They released their self-titled album on June 21, 1989 and it peaked at number 29 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in September of 1989. The band's second album, Laughing on Judgement Day, was released on October 4, 1991 and it peaked at number 13 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was certified silver by the BPI in December of 1991. The band's third album, Backstreet Symphony, was released on March 8, 1993 and it peaked at number 12 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was certified gold by the BPI in May of 1993. Since the release of their debut album, Thunder have had nineteen Top 40 singles on the UK Singles Chart, including the Top 10 hits "Dirty Love" and "Love Walked In". The band have also released two live albums, one greatest hits album, and six studio albums.
