The band was formed in 1997 by Adam Gontier, drummer of the group Three Days Grace, who named it after a lyric in their song "Addiction". Groundswell is an earlier name for the band. It performed at various local Norwood backyard parties and establishments from 1993 to 1996 under the moniker "Groundswell." The band's lineup consisted of Gontier on vocals, drums, and rhythm guitar, Brad Walst on bass, Neil Sanderson, and Matt Walsh on lead guitar. The line up remained unchanged until 2003 when Gontier left the band to pursue other interests. They were all attending high school when the band was formed. In 1997, the band self-released an EP titled Swerve, which sold 2000 copies. The EP was re-released in 1999 by Jive Records. Upon hearing more of the band's work, courtesy of Brown's producing prowess, a record label was impressed by their particular song, "I Hate Everything About You", prompting several other labels to express interest. In 2001, the band released its first full-length album, titled Groundswell. The album was co-produced by Gontier and Gavin Brown. The group has sold more than 6 million records in the United States. They have also released five studio albums including "One-X" (2006), "Life Starts Now" (2009), "Transit of Venus" (2012), "Human" (2015), and Outsider (2018). The band has achieved great commercial success, with their single “Animal I Have Become” reaching number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 2006. In 2008, they won the Juno Award for Group of the Year. The band's success has been largely attributed to Gontier's powerful and emotionally charged vocals and their melodic sound that combines elements of alternative rock, post-grunge, hard rock, and heavy metal.
