Following the break-up of his previous group, Dreve, in 2001, singer Brent Smith formed Shinedown as a side project himself. Smith was still under contract with Atlantic Records and recruited the band's original lineup of Jasin Todd on guitar, Brad Stewart on bass, and Barry Kerch on drums to start Shinedown. The band's first album, Leave a Whisper, was released on May 27, 2003. It sold more than three million copies worldwide and peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. Propelled by the success of singles "Fly from the Inside" and "45", Leave a Whisper was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in October 2003. They have also been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, as well as American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. Smith stated that the album was "darker" than its predecessor. In August 2005 their album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and spawned the singles "Save Me" and "I Dare You".
It peaked at numbers 10 and 12 respectively on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album was certified gold in March 2006. Shinedown underwent considerable changes in band members, with the 2008 lineup consisting of Brent Smith, Barry Kersh, guitarists Nick Perri and Zach Meyers, and bassist Eric Bass. The band has released seven full-length studio albums: Leave a Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), Threat to Survival (2015), Attention Attention (2018), and Planet Zero (2022). The band's music has been featured in numerous films and television series, including The Punisher (2004), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), and Rock of Ages (2012). In addition, they have performed at major music festivals such as Ozzfest, Download Festival, and Louder Than Life.
