Today's teens may not be aware that before web-based news sites, newspapers had a classified column. When drummer Lars Ulrich issued a call for other metal musicians to collaborate with him on the newspaper ad that created Metallica, he was channeling his frustration over seeing another band perform in town. Guitarist/singer James Hetfield connected up with Ulrich, and the group was completed by Ron McGovney on bass and Dave Mustaine on guitar, both of whom were friends of Hetfield's, and Robert Trujillo. Metallica's first album, Kill 'Em All, was released in 1983, and Mustaine was kicked out of the band shortly thereafter (replaced by Kirk Hammett). From those beginnings, Metallica went on to become one of the most popular and influential metal bands of all time. They were known for their aggressive, powerful sound, and for their often complex and lengthy song structures. 

Lyrically, the band tackled a variety of subject matter, including social issues, personal struggles, and the darker side of human nature. Over the course of their career, Metallica released nine studio albums, three live albums, and numerous singles and videos. They won nine Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Metallica is the biggest, baddest, and most influential metal band in the world.
