Def Leppard personified the '80s more than any other rock band. With two chart-topping albums in the 1980s that blended a hard rock edge with a melodic pop sound, the iconic British group ruled the decade with Pyromania and Hysteria, which sold over 50 million copies worldwide and were fueled by the band's continuous presence on MTV. The band's look, sound, and attitude defined the era. The group was formed in 1977 by vocalist Joe Elliott, guitarist Pete Willis, bassist Rick Savage, Tony Kenning playing the drums, and Rick Allen, with guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell. The band's first album, On Through the Night, was released in 1980 and featured the band's first hit single, "Photograph." The band's follow-up album, High 'n' Dry, was released in 1981 and featured the hit singles "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" and "Let It Go." On October 23, 1995, the band made it into the Guinness Book of World Records. What was their accomplishment? On that single day, the group performed three 45-minute shows on three different continents. Tangier, Morocco; London, England; and Vancouver, Canada were the locations. “It was surreal,” Collen said, in his memoir. “It felt like a week because we were in such drastically different environments in such a short space of time.” The band's 1985 album, Pyromania, was an instant success. Hits like "Photograph," "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'" secured Def Leppard's place in music history. The follow-up album Hysteria (1987), featured some of the group's biggest hits including the Grammy-winning "Love Bites," "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Armageddon It." With this album, the band had firmly established itself as one of the biggest commercial forces in rock music at the time. From "Photograph" to "Pour Some Sugar on Me," Def Leppard will always be remembered for its impact on '80s rock music. Their success has made them one of the best-selling rock bands of all time. In 2018, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to one of rock's most influential bands. "After getting back on the road this year and having a monumental summer tour in the US & Canada, we're thrilled to bring this stadium tour to major cities all over the world," Def Leppard's Joe Elliott said. "It will kick off concerts in Europe in Sheffield where it all started for us 45 years ago." Their close friends from Cheap Trick came and joined them in their past celebrations.
