Michael Lee Aday known professionally as Meat Loaf, was an American rock singer and actor.
Born in Dallas, Texas, to a family with a history of violence and criminal behavior, Meat Loaf grew up fearing for his life. His father was bipolar and abusive, while his mother suffered from alcoholism and mental illness. As a result, Meat Loaf developed a number of behavioral problems, including bed-wetting, stealing, and fighting.
As a teenager, Meat Loaf began playing in bands and took acting classes. He made his stage debut in a production of Hair, and later appeared in such shows as As the World Turns and All My Children. After graduating from high school, he moved to Los Angeles, where he found work as a session musician and songwriter.
In 1971, Meat Loaf released his debut album, Bat Out of Hell. The album was a commercial success, selling more than three million copies in the United States. It featured the hit singles "Bat Out of Hell" and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light."
Meat Loaf's follow-up album, Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, was released in 1993 and featured the hit single "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)." The album was another commercial success, selling more than seven million copies in the United States.
In 2006, Meat Loaf released Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose. The album was a commercial disappointment, selling less than two million copies in the United States.
Meat Loaf has appeared in a number of films, including Roadie (1980), Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), and Fight Club (1999). He has also had cameo roles in a number of television shows, including The Simpsons and House.
Meat Loaf was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He died on September 21, 2017, at the age of 71.
