The Milk Carton Kids are an American indie folk duo from Eagle Rock, California, United States, composed of singers and songwriters Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan. The duo met in Los Angeles in early 2007. They began performing together as an acoustic duo in the style of Simon & Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers, using only their voices and two acoustic guitars. In 2011 they released their first album, Prologue, followed by their second album, The Ash & Clay, in 2013.
Pattengale and Ryan have a close musical relationship, with each often finishing the other's sentences during interviews. They have said that they are "best friends" who "never fight".
The Milk Carton Kids won second place in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in the Folk category for their song "Michigan". In 2012, they won first place in the ISC for their song "Snake Eyes".
They have toured with such acts as Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Lumineers, and Punch Brothers.
The Milk Carton Kids' music has been featured on the television shows Parenthood, The Following, and Nashville.
Anti- Records published All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn't Do on June 29, 2018. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Folk Albums chart.
The Milk Carton Kids were nominated for two Grammy Awards at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards: Best American Roots Performance for "Big Time" and Best Folk Album for All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn't Do. They lost both awards to Brandi Carlile.
