Shovels & Rope is a folk duet from Charleston, South Carolina made up of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. They have released three albums: O' Be Joyful (2012), Swimmin Time (2014) and Little Seeds (2016). The pair met in early 2008 at a party in Charleston. They began dating and writing songs together, performing them informally around town. After several months they decided to form a band, taking their name from the lyric "shovels and rope" from the Townes Van Zandt song "No Place to Fall." The band's first album, O' Be Joyful, was released in 2012. It was recorded in a converted cotton mill in Charleston and produced by Trent. The album was well-received, with Rolling Stone naming it one of the year's best debut albums. Swimmin Time, the band's second album, was released in 2014. It was recorded in Nashville and produced by Dave Cobb. The album was also well-received, with NPR naming it one of the year's best albums. Little Seeds, the band's third album, was released in 2016. It was recorded in Charleston and produced by Trent. The album was once again well-received, with Paste naming it one of the year's best albums. The band has toured extensively, both in the US and internationally. They have performed at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits. In addition to their work as a band, Trent and Hearst have also released two solo albums. Trent's album, Eyes on the Lines, was released in 2016. Hearst's album, MILCK, was released in 2017.
