Ney de Souza Pereira known professionally as Ney Matogrosso is a Brazilian singer who is distinguished for his uncommon countertenor voice. Born in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Ney grew up in the countryside until he was 13 years old when he ran away from home to pursue a career as a singer. He worked as a trabalhador do brejo (swamp worker) and sang in bars and nightclubs in the city of Salvador, Bahia. It was there that he met and joined the group Os Tigres do Norte, with whom he recorded his first Ney Matogrosso album in 1964. In 1967, Ney left Os Tigres do Norte to pursue a solo career. He released his first solo album, Ney Matogrosso, in 1968.
Since then, he has released more than 30 albums and toured extensively throughout Brazil and the world. Ney's unusual vocal range and powerful stage presence have made him one of Brazil's most popular and respected singers. His work is often compared to that of international artists such as Freddie Mercury, Tim Buckley, and Frank Sinatra. In addition to his solo work, Ney has also collaborated with some other artists, including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, and Chico Buarque. Ney has won several awards throughout his career, including the Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian Popular Music Album (for Na Pegada do Arrocha, 2013) and the Prêmio da Música Brasileira for Best Male Singer (2003). He was inducted into the Brazilian Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
