Punch Brothers is an American band consisting of Chris Thile, Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny, Chris Eldridge, and Paul Kowert. The band's 2009 album, Antifogmatic, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Their 2012 album, Who's Feeling Young Now?, won the Grammy for Best Folk Album. The group has released five albums as of 2015. The members of Punch Brothers all met while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. They played together in various ensembles, including the bluegrass band Hot Rize and the jazz-rock band Jack Quartet. In 2006, mandolinist Chris Thile formed Punch Brothers as an outlet for his more experimental compositional work. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. The band has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, playing both acoustic and electric sets. They have appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Austin City Limits. In addition to their own albums, the members of Punch Brothers have collaborated with a variety of other artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Dolly Parton, and Steve Martin. The band's sound has been described as "bluegrass instrumentation and sensibilities with modern classical and rock influences." All of the members are accomplished musicians, with a wide range of musical influences. Thile, the primary composer in the band, draws from both traditional bluegrass and classical music, while Witcher and Kowert are known for their jazz and rock backgrounds, respectively. The band's music is complex and often requires a high level of musicianship to perform. As a result, Punch Brothers' live shows are often improvised and spontaneous, with the band members frequently changing roles mid-song. This approach to music-making has led to comparisons with jazz groups such as the Grateful Dead and Medeski, Martin & Wood. While Punch Brothers are considered to be a bluegrass band, their music often incorporates elements of other genres, including rock, jazz, and classical. This eclecticism has won them a wide range of fans, from traditional bluegrass enthusiasts to those more familiar with rock and roll. The band's most recent album, The Phosphorescent Blues, was released in February 2015. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Folk Albums chart, making it the group's highest-charting album to date. The Punch Brothers tickets are on sale now at Yadara!
