John McEuen is a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, an American country rock band. The group has existed in various forms since its inception in Long Beach, California, in 1966. John McEuen was born in 1945 in Akron, Ohio, the son of a tap dancer and a big band musician. He started playing music at an early age, taking up the banjo at age six and the guitar at age eleven. He attended high school in Los Angeles, where he met future Dirt Band members Jeff Hanna and Jimmie Fadden.
After graduating from high school, McEuen enrolled in college but dropped out after a year to join the Army National Guard. He was stationed in Germany, where he played in a band called the Bluegrass Diplomats. McEuen and the other members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2013.
