Gary Allan Herzberg is an American country music artist. He is known for his melodious howls and rebellious words meld together in a signature blend of smoldering vocals. Allan's success tale is inspiring - he was once a car salesman and left behind one of his demo cassettes in the glove box of a vehicle he sold. Little did Allan know that this simple act would soon prove to be pivotal in starting his musical career! Signed to Decca Records in 1996, Allan made his debut with the album Used Heart for Sale, which was released on September 17, 1996. His second album, It Would Be You, followed in 1998. All of these studio albums were issued on Decca's label. However, following the closure of that label's country division in 1999, Allan was transferred to its newly revived sister label, MCA Nashville Records. His album Smoke Rings in the Dark was his first release for MCA and was issued on October 5, 1999. It included four chart singles: "Her Man", "Smoke Rings in the Dark", "A Feelin' Like That" (a duet with Willie Nelson), and "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean". Although the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), none of its singles reached number one on the country charts.
Allan's fourth studio album, Tough All Over (No. 3 on the Billboard 200), was released on September 6, 2005. Certified gold in December 2005, it produced three singles: "Tough All Over", "Life Ain't Always Beautiful", and "Best I Ever Had (The Voice Performance)". The latter two were top 20 country hits, while the former was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts in 2006. His fifth album, Gary Allan Greatest Hits, was released on July 24, 2007, and includes the number-one singles "Tough All Over" and "Life Ain't Always Beautiful". The album was certified platinum in 2008. Allan's sixth studio album, Watchin' Airplanes, was released on September 16, 2008. It too has been certified platinum, and includes the top ten countries hit "She Could've Been Mine", as well as the top 20 hits "Watchin' Airplanes". Gary Allan Herzberg was born and raised in La Mirada, California, to Harley and Mary Herzberg. Harley worked as a truck driver and later as an equipment leasing manager, while Mary taught elementary school. To ensure that their son received a proper education, they enrolled him at La Serna High School in Whittier, California. Allan attended but did not graduate.
While still in high school, Herzberg began playing in honky tonks with his band at night. When they disbanded, he and his friend Mitch Wilkins formed the band Maverick. The band recorded an EP called Live a Little which was released on the independent label Bison Records in 1987. They did not acquire a recording contract with a major label and therefore, Herzberg and Wilkins parted ways in 1988. Herzberg sang lead vocals and played rhythm guitar on the album. The album's fourth single, "Her Man", peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts in mid-1995. It would become the first of his singles to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Used Hearts was released in September 1996, and its title track failed to make the top 40 on the Hot Country Songs charts. However, following it came "It Would Be You", which reached number eight. The album's final single, "Man to Man", peaked at number 74. Following the closure of Decca's country music division, Allan was transferred to MCA Nashville Records.
