Brooks & Dunn is an American country music duo consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, both of whom are vocalists and songwriters. The duo was founded in 1990 at the suggestion of Tim DuBois. Before the foundation, both members were solo recording artists. Between 1991 and 2015, Brooks & Dunn released ten studio albums and two compilation albums for Arista Nashville, all of which have been certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). They also have released fifty-one singles, of which twenty-six were number-one hits on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and nineteen more reached the top ten. The duo's material is known for containing influences of honky tonk, mainstream country, and rock. Brooks & Dunn has collaborated with artists from a diverse range of genres, including Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Steve Wariner, Sheryl Crow, Mac Powell of Third Day, and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn met in 1989 at the Tenneco Automotive plant in Clarksville, Tennessee. They were both members of the same country band at different times. Dunsing had also performed at various clubs in the Clarksville area. Eventually, they began working together as songwriters at a Nashville music publisher's office. Through their work, they became friends and began to develop a musical partnership. In 1990, they were both signed to Arista Nashville as solo artists. Brooks was originally supposed to release his album first, but after hearing Dunn's demo, Arista decided to release Dunn's album first. Both albums were not very successful; however, the songwriting duo was able to write some successful singles for other artists. In 1991, Brooks & Dunn's "Brand New Man" was released as a single and became a huge success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. It was followed by the release of their debut album, Brand New Man, which reached number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and was certified 6x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The duo released their second album, Hard Workin' Man, in 1993. It reached number one on the country charts and was certified 5x platinum by the RIAA. The album's lead single, "My Next Broken Heart", was a top 5 hit on the country charts, followed by the number one hit "We'll Burn That Bridge". The duo also won their first Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Hard Workin' Man". In 1994, Brooks & Dunn released their third album, Waitin' on Sundown. It debuted at number one on the country charts and was certified 4x platinum by the RIAA. The album's lead single, "She Used to Be Mine", was a top 5 hit, followed by the number one hits "Little Miss Honky Tonk" and "I'll Never Forgive My Heart". The duo released their fourth album, Borderline, in 1996. It debuted at number one on the country charts and was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA. The lead single, "Ain't Nothin' 'Bout You", was a number one hit, followed by the top 5 hits "My Maria" and "If You See Her". On September 2, 2010, at Nashville, Tennessee's Bridgestone Arena, they gave their farewell performance after announcing their retirement in August 2009. The group got back together in 2015 for a run of Las Vegas shows featuring Reba McEntire. The group was admitted to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019.
